G.I.Joe: The Rise of the Cobra (Movie Review)

Hello!

The first time I watched this movie was with my oldest sister. It was a lovely evening and I quickly fell in love with the humorous G.I Joe: The Rise of the Cobra. It was made in 2009 and when I started watching it I had no idea what to expect. My first impression was surprise at seeing the 9th Doctor from Doctor Who (Christopher Eccelson) as a lead role. But there were also other great actors/actresses; I loved Rachel Nicols part in this, Channing Tatum (was gorgeous as usual), Joseph Gordon-Levitt (ASDFGHJKL) and Sienna Miller.

The movie is about a military unit who are sent to stop an evil organization that are set out to cause a lot of destruction. This elite unit is called G.I Joe, and they are the best of the best. It sounds like a very simple idea, but you can’t believe how many different things could be put into this.

My favourite scenes were, of course, the fighting ones. I love a good battle in any movie. This movie had ship battles, hand on hand combat or and even fighting to do with newly invented technology to mix things up. One of my favourite characters was called Storm Shadow… who fought much like a ninja. I loved his character so much and all the battles he was included in. It was granted that I would also like Channing Tatum’s role because he is such a brilliant actor, but I have to give a lot of credit to his side kick in the movie played by Marlon Wayans. He added humor to the film, and was there to make me laugh through all the serious parts as well. I felt like if we put him and Eddie Murphy in the same film… we’d get something great for sure ^.^ Joseph Gordon-Levitt played a role I didn’t expect him to… and he had a lot of funny lines as well which I don’t think were purposely funny but I found personally hilarious.

I think the villains and opposing team were just as developed when it comes to backstory and their relationships too. Usually the focus goes to the good guys but here it wasn't the case. Although the plot and action seem vitally important, the characterisation takes the forefront simply because a lot of time and effort was put into their relationships and interactions. We also get quite a lot of backstory which adds to that as well.

The special affects because of the new technology included in this film were spot on. All the electricity currents and… well, let’s just say you’ll need to see it for yourself ;)

The film was directed by Stephen Sommers who also directed movies like the Disney adaption of Kipling’s The Jungle Book and produced Oliver Twist. The movie runs for about 113 minutes and is rated a 12.

Olivia’s Question: If you could have an army of whatever (army of artists, bookworms, teachers) what type of people would be in your army and why?

  1. Hey Liv! Lovely review as always! (I've been thinking about doing movie reviews but who knows? maybe later. ;) I've never watched G.I. Joe and never had much of an inclination to (but now I do!) I love the magical aspects of it (especially the electricity! This movie gets cool points by default from me.)

And for your question, I think I'd have to say that I would want an army full of Thunderbirds. That way I could fly and still use electricity whenever I wanted. I know. LAME.

    1. Yes! Movie reviews would be wonderful to see from you! I am curious to know your taste in movies as well. I think this one was so much fun to watch as well! Ahaha, I hope you get your army of Thunderbirds someday :)

  2. Huge G.I. Joe fan here! The old school cartoons mostly, but I do like these movies as well. This one, compared to the sequel, is waaaayyyy better. I didn't like how everything went down with Duke in the sequel. Still, they are some pretty great movies. You should definitely watch the sequel. I'm hoping for the next movie, just to see if my theory is correct.

  5. I've watched this movie but although I liked it, it wasn't anything special for me. I like action movies but not all of them lol and if I could have an army of whatever may be my choice I would go with people with abilities à la X-Men :)

    1. That's a pretty clever choice because their powers are cool and pretty handy too!

  6. I saw GI Joe a few years ago. I do remember visually being quite captivated when the nano technology was used as a weapon--the way it just disintegrate everything. Though I enjoyed it, it's not one that I would consider watching again. Since you did ask...hehe...My army would consist of dragons and phoenix.

  9. I enjoyed this movie too! It takes a bit of suspension of logic, but that's fine with me. I didn't realize The Ninth Doctor (can't spell his name) was in this one! Have you seen the sequel? I thought the Rock was a nice addition, but it wasn't nearly as good.

    1. Gonna be watching the second one pretty soon! I'm okay with the Rock so I am curious to know what it will be like. Most people seem to be disappointed by it?

  11. I have never seen GI Joe. From your review it sounds like a good movie.

I am partial to Dumbledore's Army from Harry Potter. :)
