Olivia Snaps is my photography related meme on Olivia's Catastrophe. I photograph things to do with books and life and pretty much anything I feel like snapping.
I recently mentioned that I wanted to change things up with this meme, simply because I wasn't satisfied. So I've decided to give each post a theme and then take pictures contributing to that theme, whether it will be to do with books or something else, we'll have to see. Today I wanted to talk about Shadowhunters.
To this day, not at all.
|Can you tell Isabelle is one of my favourite characters?|
When the final book in the series came out, I pre-ordered it. I think I have only ever pre-ordered four books, so that was quite something. I read that one in the space of two days because it is fairly massive.
But why do I love this series so much?
It's because I love the Shadowhunter world. I think Cassandra Clare has perfectly crafted a complex world that works. There are aspects of it that make it unique like the shadowhunters themselves and how they wear black when they are fighting and white when they are mourning. Their runes, steeles and witchlights. The Silent Brothers and the demons, and then the common paranormal creatures like vampires, warlocks and Seelie that come to life in unique ways in her books. So many people give Clare grief, saying that they want her to write outside of the Shadowhunter world. It seems to have increased in volume now that she is releasing Lady Midnight later this year. But personally as someone who is working on a fantasy novel herself, when you create a world and it actually works of course you don't want to ditch it and start from scratch. You love it, and it's something that you crafted. And if you've crafted one as beautiful and great as the Shadowhunter realm, then, well, I will happily read book after book set there.
Although the world to this one is wonderful, there is another reason why I can't get enough of her books. The characters are done so well. They're each individual, with their own personalities. The worst thing is that she doesn't mind sacrificing parts of her main characters or even some characters that I came to love for the sake of keeping the plot suspenseful and moving forward. Relationships blossom and some characters find love, and other relationships cause mayhem and problems.

The movie, City of Bones, in my opinion, was a flop. It didn't bring across the characters or the story in the way that is even worthy of the books. As of now I've only seen episode one of the show. They've changed a few things, but they stay mostly true to the story and the character portrayal is done fairly well. Shoving aside the not-to-great acting skills that I can't fully judge yet (it was only one episode!) it has a lot of promise.
If I haven't convinced you to pick up the books yet, I don't know what will :D

My book review of City of Heavenly Fire by Cassandra Clare.
Olivia's Question: Have you been watching the show? What do you think of the Shadowhunter books? Also, do you like this new form of Olivia Snaps?
