December Wrap Up 2016

Hi everyone!

My last monthly wrap up for the month 2016...

The month of December had a lot going on! First of all, there was the Early Bird Tournament for basketball. My team placed fourth, which wasn't so bad. I was quite bruised and battered after it as well, especially my knees, so I took a week from training. We had a couple of league games this month as well and we won our last game before Christmas by one point. It was a team we had played before and lost to as well, so it was nice to be winners this time round.

My school held the winter fair. There were many food stalls, a book stall - and yes, I did buy some books :D - and lots of stalls selling items for charity. I volunteered at a stall and we raised a bit over 200 euros for children and education in Zambia, which was a positive outcome.

I ate out a lot. I have been following my clean eating but I did let go a bit for the holidays (of course.) When I went Christmas shopping with my mum we had a nice lunch out and I ate the most delicious salad bowl with a smoothie. There was dinner with my mum and one of my sisters, Christmas Eve dinner at a restaurant and a lunch at Bagels and Beans (a place with the best bagels and very nice hot chocolate). And that doesn't even include the homemade and BEST Christmas breakfast, dinner, and boxing day meals. All the food D:

There was the teenager Christmas Party at my church which was a lot of fun to attend. Both my older sisters flew home for Christmas as well which made it very cosy and full, but so nice too. There was loads of shopping. I bought myself a massive new blender as well which I am adoring and putting to full use.

As a family we all went to see Rogue One, as my dad is a HUGE Star Wars fan. I loved the movie. I thought it was much better than The Force Awakens. On the last day before both my older sisters' left, we went to see La La Land in the cinema as well. I'm eager to see anything with Emma Stone in it and I also really liked that film.
Christmas Day was epic. Lots of dancing, fun memories and cool presents.

I spent New Year's Eve at my friends house with a group of girls and we all had a nice dinner together, danced way too much, and watched fireworks outside as we saw the new year in.

Somehow, I managed to read 16 books in December! I think this might have been my best reading month of the year, and that has a lot to do with the holiday where I pretty much read a book every day until the end of the year. Here's what I read:

The Rains by Gregg Hurwitz, Initiate by Laura L. Fox and The Alchemists of Loom by Elise Kova are novels I have also reviewed already.

13 Little Blue Envelopes by Maureen Johnson, which was a buddy read with Anissa @ The Bookworm Central. I liked it, but also had some issues with it?

Brown Girl Dreaming by Jacqueline Woodson was a novel in verse I had been meaning to get to for a while, and I enjoyed it but was a little underwhelmed..

A Room of One's Own by Virginia Woolf was an essay I really enjoyed. A lot more than I expected to.

The Bourbon Thief by Tiffany Reisz was a crazy read. But more on that later, when I review it.

Blood Red Snow White by Marcus Sedgwick has a beautiful cover, and was interesting, but slow.

Death of a Salesman by Arthur Miller was my first play of the month, and I really enjoyed it. However, The Glass Menagerie by Tennessee Williams was appreciated more. And then I read "MASTER Harold" ... and the boys by Athol Fugard and that became the best play I read all month by far.

A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens was my first Dickens novel. I read it on Christmas Eve, in the morning, and it set the atmosphere for Christmas perfectly.

Ruin and Rising by Leigh Bardugo finally concluded the series for me. I liked the ending a lot, and I had some issues with the novel too. But mostly, a good read.

Dracula's Heir by Sam Stall and The Crimes of Dr. Watson by Duane Swierczynski were both interactive mystery reads. They were quick, fun and I really enjoyed them. Especially the Dracula-based one, as I love the original classic so much.

Bull by David Elliot is a novel in verse based on the Greek myth of the Minotaur. More on that in my review as well.

I've decided I am going to set myself four books for every month in 2017. Only physical books, although it is likely I'll end up reading ebooks too. So for this month:

Silent Songbird by Melanie Dickerson
The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho
Winter by Marissa Meyer
The Ugly by Alexander Boldizar

This is the end of these challenges for me! I wasn't really focused on these challenges, and more so just read what I wanted to or needed to for the blog, and then if fit a category I was happy. I'm glad I completed three. And there are four challenges I was pretty close to finishing. And some I was really far off from. But there is only one challenge I'll be doing in 2017 and I'll be reading toward it a lot more, so here's to that :D

The 12 Month Classics: 12/12 COMPLETE!
Popsugar 2016 Challenge: 36/40
2016 #BustleReads Challenge: 14/20

That's all from 2016 from me! Now it's time to look ahead! But first:

Olivia's Question: How was December for you? What was your favourite read of the month?

  1. Congrats on your basketball success!!
And I hope you enjoy The Alchemist. I liked that this was a book to be enjoyed on different levels, as a fun adventure story or as a thoughtful spiritual read.

  7. I completely agree with the Emma Stone statement. I cannot wait to go and watch La La Land!

I am glad you had a great time around the holidays and that you team won that match!

I want to read A Room of One's Own pretty soon too. And I am glad you enjoyed A Christmas Carol - I love rereading it around Christmas!

I did not read that much in December or the entire second half of the year, but I am glad 2017 is here because I am ready for a great reading year.

Sorry I wasn't so active lately. I fell out of blogging in the second part of the year, but I loved following your journey on Instagram!

    1. I hope you'll be able to love the movie when you get to go and see it! I really loved it :) And yes, I think my team needed to win a match. Losing too much does quite a number on confidence. I hope you can get to A Room of One's Own - I recommend it! And hopefully you can fall back in love with reading soon :)

It has been great to stay connected with you on instagram. Thanks for sticking around with me there <3

  8. That hot chocolate looks amazing!!! Yum!! Sounds like a really nice holiday too :) Wasn't La La Land great, I thought it was so unique and loved how it mixed retro stuff with modern day. I read more this December than I usually do, which was nice! Ooh Winter was excellent, hope you love it. I was a little meh on Ruin and Rising too; if you haven't read Six of Crows yet it's super amazing. I loved the Grisha trilogy overall and loved this even more!
